With his Southern baritone that closely resembles the Man in Black’s iconic voice, lead singer David Burney is “channeling J.R.,” says Cash’s niece Jackie. Leading roots music publication No Depression has described Johnny Folsom 4’s soul-stirring, career-spanning show as a "time machine" for those who never saw Cash perform live.

Unlike some tribute bands, Johnny Folsom 4 doesn’t pretend to be the artist. Instead, Johnny Folsom 4 honors the Man in Black with an authentic, organic performance that fills the concert hall with Johnny Cash’s sound and spirit. “No one can ever really sound like Johnny Cash,” Burney tells audiences. “But if you close your eyes and feel Johnny Cash in the room, we’ve done our job.”

The band performs classic hits such as “Ring of Fire” and “I Walk the Line” as well as later-period favorites like “Hurt.” The Johnny Folsom 4 experience also includes entertaining and informative stories from Cash’s legendary life.

Johnny Folsom 4 also includes David Gresham filling the roles of Luther Perkins and Carl Perkins, two of Cash's famous guitarists, and Steve Eisenstadt (bass) and Randy Benefield (drums) providing Cash’s trademark rhythms. All four are retirees dedicated full time to touring and recording with the band.

Johnny Folsom 4 has played hundreds of shows around the country the last 15 years, including the sold-out, 1,500-seat Lincoln Amphitheater in Indiana, the sold-out, 1,000 seat Carolina Theatre in Durham, NC, the Collins Theatre in Paragould, AR (near Johnny Cash’s boyhood home), Daryl Hall’s Daryl’s House in Pawling, NY, the 700-seat Murphy Theatre near Cincinnati, the historic State Theatre in Falls Church, VA, and City Winery venues in Nashville, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. In addition, in 2011 the band played the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga, TN, and headlined Raleigh, NC’s NC State Fair in 2016.
